Sum Ultimate Medicare

Prof. Manojranjan Nayak, founder and President of Siksha ‘O' Anusandhan (SOA) Deemed to be University in Bhubaneswar, has emerged as the harbinger of change in education and enterprise for over two decades in the state of Odisha. A first-generation entrepreneur--- an 'Edupreneur' as he likes to call himself-- Prof. Nayak gravitated towards issues such as education and social inequalities owing to his rural upbringing and the hardships he had encountered early in his life. He understood how vital quality education was to a knowledge-based economy, and how it held the key to individual and social transformation. His fervent desire to provide students of Odisha access to quality education comparable with the best in the country and to turn Odisha into an educational hub led to the emergence of the SOA Deemed to be University.

An alumnus of NIT Rourkela where he did his B Tech degree in Electrical Engineering and IIT, Kharagpur, from where he obtained his M Tech. Prof. Nayak started as a faculty at the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) affiliated to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) in Bhubaneswsar. He did his Ph.D from OUAT. It was during his stint as faculty at CET that Prof. Nayak's focus on education-based entrepreneurship took flight in 1996 prompting him to establish the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Trust and also the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER).

From teaching 118 students at ITER, his 'edupreneurship' saw the Siksha O Anusandhan University grow from humble beginnings into a 120-acre facility which today boasts of nine institutions and 13 special research centers where 16 undergraduate, 76 post-graduate, Ph. D. and Post-Doctoral programs in different disciplines are offered to over 10,000 students in various courses. From management (Institute of Business and Computer Studies-IBCS) to hospitality (School of Hotel Management -SHM) to pharmacy (School of Pharmaceutical Sciences -SPS), to nursing (SUM Nursing College-SNC) to dental sciences (Institute of Dental Sciences-IDS) to medical sciences (Institute of Medical Sciences-IMS) to agricultural sciences (Institute of Agricultural Sciences-IAS) to law (SOA National Institute of Law-SNIL) among a host of other professional courses are offered under the SOA Deemed to be University which was conferred with the Deemed to be University status in July 2007.

A quiet personality who always prefers to maintain a low profile, Prof. Nayak's silent determination and innate ability to create, build, grow and impact has led to the creation of some finest institutions of excellence in learning across the education spectrum. SOA Deemed to be University is today counted among the finest in the region. SOA's credentials were further burnished when it figured among the top 25 universities of the country for four consecutive years in the rankings issued by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the HRD Ministry. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which has termed the University as socially inclusive, has re-accredited it with 'A' Grade.

SOA’s focus being on investigation and scrutiny, it has set up 13 research centers and 42 laboratories to conduct research. The latest research centers to come up are the Bio-fuel and Bio-processing Research Centre and Center for Environment and Climate. Work of SOA’s faculty and research scholars gets published regularly in reputed peer reviewed international journals. As on date, the university has 4529 Scopus Indexed publications to its credit till now with an H-Index of 51.

Researchers at SOA have so far filed more than 100 patents while the number of novel gene sequences submitted is 515. The number of clinical research trials is 26 and the number of EMR projects and consultancy projects taken up are around 90.

The good practices followed at SOA are reflected in its curriculum which follows choice based credit system, outcome based education and project based learning. The efforts are aimed at upgrading the academic resources and learning environment, raising the quality of teaching and research and faculty development. Steps taken for energy conservation, use of renewable energy, plantation and hazardous waste management are other measures taken to create environment consciousness among the students and faculty members.

Prof. Nayak's willingness to pursue a desired goal and humility to invite, connect and empower others to unleash their contributions is the reason SOA has been burning bright. Perceptive and quick to identify opportunities as well as talent, he ensured from the very beginning that he had the right people with him who found his vision compelling. He firmly believes that setting up institutions will have an impact beyond his lifetime and the benefits will accrue over several generations. The 'SUM Ultimate Medicare', a super-specialty hospital waiting to be unveiled, is the latest feather in the SOA cap and is meant to serve this purpose.

Conceived as a SOA green-field project, the state-of-the-art healthcare facility will provide an ecosystem of healing with high quality care and safety features across the care continuum as recognition of the ever growing demand for world-class health care in the state.
